On September 24th Microsoft released your initial Community Technical Preview for SQL Server 2019, that had been CTP2.0. At the same time Microsoft pushed out an important preview for SQL Server Management Studio (SSMS) called version 18.

This new edition of SSMS will have a smaller download size, and yes it no longer shares components in the database engine. By not sharing components, Microsoft has eliminated the potential overwriting issues that can take place when installing either SQL Server or SSMS. You need to definitely note that this new preview of SSMS no longer is supported on Windows 8. The newest SSMS needs to be linked with Windows 10, or at a Windows Server 2016 or above machine.
You do not need to install SQL Server 2019 to run this latest version of SQL Server Management Studio. This new version can be used to manage your older instances (SQL Server 2017, SQL Server 2016, etc.), as well as any databases you might in Azure.
